WA Day Festival has your palate taken care of courtesy of Smashed As Burger and Blasta Brewing

WA Day punters eager to put their feet up after a day exploring the festival will be able to grab a cold beer as they enjoy the smell of American-style barbecue and the sounds of live music.

Smoked barbecue and brews are being brought to the WA Day Festival this Sunday by two-award winning local businesses.

Blasta Brewing will supply the drinks and Smashed As Burger has the food covered.

Located in the WA Festival Zone, the area will be a space for families to relax, and select from a wide range of brews and tasty barbecue options including smashed burgers, beef brisket and pulled pork.

Blasta owner Steven Russell’s brewery, located not far from Burswood Park, jumped at the chance to showcase their products to hundreds of thousands of festival goers in their own neighbourhood.

“Despite being a craft brewery, we’ve always been approachable in what we make,” Mr Russell said.

“We want people to enjoy our beers. We are focused on making make premium beers at affordable prices and getting them out to the consumer.”

Mr Russell said the stall would also sell non-alcoholic drinks such as hydrogen infused water.

Smashed As Burger owner Jason Meldrum said barbecue was in his “DNA”.

“Our signature dish is our smash burger. That’s basically what everyone comes for,” he said.

Mr Meldrum said there was a “massive” difference between Australian and American barbecue.

“We think we barbecue over here, but really we grill. American barbecue is mostly over a live fire. So everything’s cooked over charcoal or wood.”

Mr Meldrum’s top barbecue tip is “be lazy”.

“Grab another beer because it really isn’t hard. If it’s hard to do, you’re doing it wrong.”

The WA Day Festival is made possible thanks to support from the WA Government, Lotterywest and BHP and will be held in conjunction with The West Test between Australia and India at Optus Stadium on the same day.

Patrons are encouraged to take advantage of the free public transport available to Burswood Park as part of fare free Sundays for all Smartrider holders.
